White guilt at its worst

February 20, 2007

The Fighting Irish. Nothing can offend me more than the existence of this symbol. While we who have Native American, or Amerindian blood are losing our symbols, the Fighting Irish lives on.
The NCAA pressured our school into giving up its symbol, Chief Illiniwek, depriving us of a long-standing tradition. But for what? White guilt. The panel of white men feel responsible (and rightly so) for the actions of their forefathers who came to this continent and wiped out entire civilizations. They don’t care what this symbol means to many students and alumni of any kind of ethnic background. They don’t realize that “The Chief” is a reminder that we live on borrowed land and that many suffered so that we may live on it. Instead of updating “The Chief” (whose image was admittedly dated and incorrect), they chose to eliminate him. The heritage of the Illini is dying and these men just want to sleep soundly.
All right. But don’t stop there. Another blatantly offensive image is out there: The Fighting Irish. The NCAA executives have no problem with this symbol because it is white, even though it is just as dated. Ironically enough, by trying to appear PC they’ve shown us how racist they really are. White men are allowed to keep their symbols, brown men aren’t. Get rid of them too!
